                                  The Quiet Duck

                                               by Wendy Toy

The quiet duck could swim, but she could not quack.

“But a duck must quack,” said Mama Duck.  “Crawl under Grandma’s quilt.  It will

warm your throat warm and you will quack.”

The quiet duck grew quite warm under the quilt.

“Please take off the quilt, Mama,” the quiet duck moaned.

“Can you quack now?” asked Mama Duck.

The quiet duck opened her mouth.  No quack came out.

“My quack will not work,” cried the quiet duck.

     Grandma Duck came to visit.

“I brought hot soup for you,” said Grandma Duck.  “It will help you quack.”

The quiet duck tasted the soup.

      “It’s quite good,” she said.

She opened her mouth, but no quack came out.  The quiet duck sobbed.

The quiet duck’s brother handed her a box.

“Eat one of these and you will quack like a queen,” he told her.

The quiet duck reached into the box. She popped something into her mouth.

“Quack, quack,” she said. “I can quack!”

“What is in that box?”  asked Mama Duck.

     The not-so-quiet duck grinned.

     “Saltine quackers!"
